What is wellness or wellbeing? According to the World Health Organisation, Wellbeing is more than the absence of disease. Health is physical, mental, social, spiritual and emotional wellbeing. 4 Keys to wellness What we are now referring to is what is commonly termed today the holistic human being. But what does holistic mean? It means that the human being is a whole made up of many parts and if you neglect one of the parts the whole cannot function optimally. The parts that makes up this wonderful whole called the human being are: physical, emotional, social, intellectual and spiritual. Physical Health To be physically healthy you should ensure that you eat at least 3 well balanced meals daily, do at least 20 to 30 minutes of exercise daily and have regularly annual check-ups with your doctor. Emotional Health To be emotionally healthy you must ensure that you limit negative stress and relax regularly. Intellectual Health To be intellectually healthy you should set educational and career development goals. Community and social health To ensure community and social health ensure that you are part of a circle of friends, family and community. In 1983, a study of the residents of Alameda County, California, showed that people who look after their body and health, but who have little or no contact with their community have shorter lifespans than those who neglect their health and yet feel they are needed, wanted and loved as part of a community. Spiritual Health To ensure spiritual health you need to love and be loved. You need to have a purpose that compels you through life with passion. Most of all you need hope and hope comes from being connected with your maker. A sense of knowing you are special and have been created for a purpose. Knowing that whatever happens in your life your God is in control. |
